In agriculture, sulfate fertilizers are used to provide essential nutrients such as sulfur and magnesium to crops. Sulfates can also have negative environmental effects. When sulfur dioxide is released into the atmosphere, it can react with oxygen and water to form sulfuric acid, which can contribute to acid rain. In addition, excessive sulfate concentrations in soil and water can lead to undesirable effects like soil acidity, reduced plant growth, and deterioration of water quality.
