Sodium carbonate
Na₂CO₃
Sodium carbonate is a white, odorless, water-soluble salt with the chemical formula Na2CO3. It is commonly known as soda ash or washing soda. Sodium carbonate has various uses in different industries, such as in glass manufacturing, detergent production and wastewater treatment. In glass manufacturing, sodium carbonate is used to lower the melting point of silica, making it easier to form glass at lower temperatures. In detergent production, it is used as a water softener and to help remove dirt and grease from fabrics and dishes. It is also used in wastewater treatment to adjust the pH levels and to remove heavy metals from the water. Sodium carbonate can be produced synthetically through the Solvay process, which involves the reaction of sodium chloride, limestone, and ammonia. It can also be found naturally in the form of trona or nahcolite minerals.
