He worked his way up through the railroad industry and eventually bought a majority stake in the Keystone Bridge Company, which he used as a stepping stone to build his own steel empire.

Carnegie was a pioneer of vertical integration, the process of owning and controlling every aspect of the production process, from raw materials to finished goods. He invested heavily in new technologies, such as the Bessemer process for mass-producing steel, and built a vast network of factories, mills, and foundries across the country.

In 1901, Carnegie sold his steel interests to J.P. Morgan for $480 million, making him one of the richest men in the world. He spent the rest of his life as a philanthropist, donating vast sums of money to support education, libraries, and other public institutions. He is perhaps best known for his famous essay “The Gospel of Wealth,” in which he argued that the wealthy had a moral obligation to use their wealth for the greater good.
