Social influence refers to the ways in which people’s attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors are affected by the presence or actions of others. This can occur both intentionally and unintentionally and can take many different forms, such as conformity, obedience, persuasion, and social comparison.

Conformity is the tendency to change our attitudes and behaviors to align with those of the majority or the norms of a group. One classic study on conformity is Asch’s (1951) study, where participants were asked to match the length of lines and were surrounded by confederates who intentionally gave incorrect answers. Participants often gave the same incorrect answer as the group despite it being obvious that it was wrong.

Obedience, on the other hand, is the tendency to follow orders from an authority figure. A classic study on obedience is Milgram’s (1963) study, where participants were instructed to deliver electric shocks to another person (who was actually a confederate) for each wrong answer they gave in a learning task. The shocks were increasingly severe, and despite their protests, the majority of participants delivered potentially lethal shocks at the experimenter’s urging.

Persuasion refers to the process of changing someone’s attitudes or beliefs through communication. There are several factors that influence persuasion, including the source (credibility, attractiveness), message (content, framing), and audience (personality, motivation). One example of persuasion is advertising, where companies use persuasive messages to promote their products.

Social comparison involves evaluating ourselves and our abilities in comparison to others. This can influence our attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors as we strive to match or surpass the performance of others. An example of social comparison is when we evaluate our success in a given task by comparing it to the performance of others in the group.

Understanding social influence can be helpful in many areas of life, from marketing to public health. It can inform strategies for persuasion and behavior change, as well as provide insight into group dynamics and decision-making. However, it is also important to be aware of potential negative consequences, such as the pressure to conform or obey authority figures even in situations that violate our moral code.
