Wisconsin v. Yoder (1972) is a landmark case in the United States Supreme Court that dealt with the constitutional rights of parents to direct the education of their children. The case involved three Amish families from Wisconsin who challenged the state’s compulsory attendance law that required all children to attend school until the age of 16.

The Amish families argued that their religious beliefs and practices prohibited them from sending their children to public schools beyond the eighth grade. They contended that attending high school would expose their children to beliefs and values that contradicted their own, and would eventually lead to the loss of their religious identity.

The Supreme Court, in a 6-1 decision, held that the compulsory attendance law violated the free exercise clause of the First Amendment, which protects an individual’s right to practice their religion without undue interference from the government. The Court noted that the Amish community had a long-standing tradition of separating themselves from the larger society, and that their religious beliefs and practices were essential to their way of life.

The Court also recognized the important role of the family in transmitting religious and cultural values from one generation to the next. As such, the Court held that Wisconsin’s compulsory attendance law placed a substantial burden on the Amish families’ religious freedom without any compelling state interest to justify it.

The Yoder decision established an exception to compulsory education laws for parents who hold sincere religious beliefs that are in conflict with the requirements of public education. However, the decision did not give parents an absolute right to opt their children out of public education, and states may still impose reasonable regulations to ensure that children receive basic education.
