Cecil Rhodes
British colonial financier and statesman in South Africa made a fortune in gold and diamond mining; helped colonize the territory now known as Zimbabwe; proponent for “mystical imperialism”, or the act of introducing Judeo-Christian principles in an otherwise “secular” area.
Cecil Rhodes was a British businessman, imperialist, and politician. He was born on July 5, 1853, in Bishop’s Stortford, Hertfordshire, England, and died on March 26, 1902, in Muizenberg, Cape Colony, South Africa, at the age of 48.
Rhodes was the founder of the De Beers diamond company and played a significant role in the economic and political development of Southern Africa during the late 19th century. He was a strong advocate for British colonialism and believed that the British Empire should expand and dominate the world. Rhodes was also the founder of the Rhodes Scholarship, which provides scholarships for international students to attend the University of Oxford.
In addition to his business and political activities, Rhodes was known for his controversial views on race and imperialism. He believed that the Anglo-Saxon race was superior to other races and sought to establish British hegemony over Africa. Rhodes was a fierce advocate for the creation of a British-controlled, Cape-to-Cairo railway that would connect the southern and northern parts of the continent and solidify British control of the region.
Despite his controversial beliefs and actions, Rhodes was revered by many in Great Britain and South Africa, and his legacy continues to be felt today.
