Understanding Absolute Location: Definition and Examples in Geography

absolute location

specific place, uses grids, longitude & latitude

Absolute location refers to the precise geographic coordinates or address of a specific point on the Earth’s surface. It is usually described using longitude and latitude coordinates or a specific street address. Longitude is a measure of distance east or west of the Prime Meridian, which is an imaginary line that runs from the North Pole to the South Pole and passes through Greenwich, England. Latitude is a measure of distance north or south of the Equator, which is also an imaginary line that circles the Earth at its widest point. When combined, these two measures provide an absolute location for any point on the Earth’s surface. For example, the absolute location of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France is 48.8584° N, 2.2945° E.
