Long-term memory is the system in our brain that stores and retrieves information that has been acquired over time. It encompasses everything we remember beyond a few seconds, and it is responsible for our ability to recall skills, concepts, experiences, and other types of knowledge that we have gained through our past experiences.

Long-term memory is organized into two main types: declarative memory and non-declarative memory.

1. Declarative memory: This type of long-term memory stores information that we can consciously recall and verbalize. It is further divided into two subtypes, i.e., episodic memory and semantic memory. Episodic memory is our ability to recall specific personal events and their contexts. Semantic memory is our general knowledge of the world and its concepts, such as math, science, language, and history.

2. Non-declarative memory: This type of long-term memory is more implicit in nature, meaning that it is not consciously accessible or verbalized. It stores information about motor skills, reflexes, and other cognitive abilities, such as riding a bike, typing on a keyboard, or playing a musical instrument.

Long-term memory can be improved through various techniques, such as repetition, rehearsal, elaboration, and organization. Additionally, sleep and restful breaks have also been found to enhance the consolidation and retention of long-term memory. However, forgetting can also occur due to aging, injury, illness, or loss of synapses or neurons. Therefore, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, nourishing one’s intellect, and learning new things regularly can help in preserving and strengthening long-term memory.
