Motor neurons are specialized nerve cells responsible for transmitting impulses from the central nervous system (CNS) to skeletal muscles, enabling voluntary movements. The cell bodies of motor neurons are located within the CNS (brainstem or spinal cord), while their axons extend outside the CNS to form synapses with the muscle fibers through the neuromuscular junction (NMJ).

There are two types of motor neurons: somatic (or voluntary) and autonomic (or involuntary). Somatic motor neurons control skeletal muscles, allowing us to move voluntarily. Autonomic motor neurons, on the other hand, control non-skeletal muscles, such as those in the heart, smooth muscles of the digestive tract or glands, and are responsible for involuntary movements like breathing, heart rate, glandular secretions, digestion, and excretion.

Motor neurons can be further classified based on their axons’ size and myelinization. Large motor neurons with heavily myelinated axons conduct impulses quickly to produce quick, powerful muscle contractions. Smaller motor neurons with poorly myelinated axons, on the other hand, generate less powerful muscle contractions but are more resistant to fatigue.

Diseases that affect motor neurons, such as motor neuron disease, can lead to muscle weakness, paralysis, and even death. Treatments for such conditions tend to focus on reducing or managing symptoms and improving the quality of life of affected individuals.
