An axon is a long and thin extension of a neuron that transmits electrical impulses away from the cell body. It is covered in myelin, which insulates and speeds up the conduction of impulses. Axons communicate with other neurons or muscle cells at junctions called synapses. The length of axons can vary from a few millimeters to over a meter in length, for example in some neurons that connect the spinal cord to the muscles of the lower limbs. Damage to the axon can lead to impaired transmission of nerve impulses and various neurological diseases.
