Chromosomes are made up of long strands of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid), which is the genetic material of an organism. DNA is composed of four nitrogenous bases (adenine, guanine, cytosine, and thymine), along with a sugar molecule and a phosphate group. These nucleotides are arranged in a specific sequence to form the genetic code that determines the traits and characteristics of the organism. In addition to DNA, chromosomes also contain histone proteins that help to package and organize the DNA into a compact structure that can fit inside the nucleus of a cell. Together, DNA and histones form the chromatin fibers that make up chromosomes.
