Retrograde motion is an apparent reversal in the motion of planets in the sky. It occurs because of the varying speeds at which planets move in their orbits relative to Earth’s orbit. When Earth and another planet are on the same side of the sun, planets with closer orbits to the sun move faster, overtaking and passing Earth. This makes it appear as if the planet is moving in the opposite direction in the sky for a period of time. This motion is temporary and after a few weeks or months, the planet resumes its eastward movement.
