Why does the Corpus Luteum produce more Progesterone than Estrogen?

The corpus luteum is a temporary endocrine structure that forms in the ovary after the release of an egg during ovulation. Its main function is to produce hormones, particularly progesterone. The reason why the corpus luteum produces more progesterone than estrogen is related to its role in supporting pregnancy.

After ovulation occurs, the ovarian follicle that released the egg transforms into the corpus luteum. This transformation is driven by a surge in luteinizing hormone (LH) from the pituitary gland. Once formed, the corpus luteum starts producing progesterone.

Progesterone is essential for preparing the uterus for potential implantation of a fertilized egg and maintaining pregnancy. It prepares the lining of the uterus (endometrium) to receive and nourish a fertilized egg by thickening the endometrial lining and promoting the formation of blood vessels.

Estrogen, on the other hand, is primarily produced by the ovarian follicles before ovulation. Its main role is to stimulate the development of the uterine lining (proliferation phase) during the menstrual cycle. However, after ovulation, the production of estrogen decreases, and the corpus luteum takes over the production of progesterone.

The corpus luteum continues to produce progesterone for approximately 12-14 days. If fertilization and implantation do not occur, the corpus luteum degenerates, leading to a decrease in progesterone production, and menstruation begins. However, if fertilization occurs, the developing embryo produces a hormone known as human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), which signals the corpus luteum to continue producing progesterone to support the early stages of pregnancy until the placenta fully forms and takes over hormone production.

Thus, the corpus luteum produces more progesterone than estrogen to ensure the proper preparation and maintenance of the uterine lining for potential implantation of a fertilized egg and to support early pregnancy.
