For instance, carbon-12 has six protons and six neutrons, while carbon-14 has six protons and eight neutrons.

Electrons are negatively charged particles that orbit the nucleus in various energy levels called electron shells. Electrons are much smaller and lighter than protons or neutrons. They have a negligible mass compared to the other two particles. The number of electrons in an element is typically equal to the number of protons, making the atom electrically neutral.

Electron shells are organized into specific energy levels, with the innermost shell being the closest to the nucleus and the outermost shell being the farthest. Each shell can hold a maximum number of electrons: the first shell can hold up to two electrons, the second up to eight, the third up to 18, and so on.

The electrons in the outermost shell, known as valence electrons, play a significant role in determining the chemical behavior and reactivity of an atom. Elements with a full outermost shell tend to be stable and less reactive, while those with incomplete outer shells are more likely to participate in chemical reactions to gain, lose, or share electrons and achieve a stable configuration.

The study of atoms and their properties is an essential part of chemistry and physics. It helps us understand the composition of matter, how different elements interact, and how chemical reactions occur. This knowledge has profound applications in various scientific fields, including materials science, biology, and environmental science.
