Understanding Trichomonas vaginalis: The Infective Trophozoite Form and Transmission Methods

Infective stage of a Trichomanas vaginalis?

Trophozoite

The infective stage of Trichomonas vaginalis is the trophozoite form. The trophozoites are pear-shaped, flagellated organisms that exist in the extracellular environment, usually in vaginal secretions. The trophozoites of Trichomonas vaginalis are capable of infecting new hosts during sexual intercourse. The transmission of the parasite from an infected person to a new host occurs when the trophozoites are transferred to the new host’s genital tract during sexual intercourse. The trophozoites can survive for several hours outside the body, making it possible for them to be transmitted through contact with contaminated objects such as towels, bathing suits, or toilet seats.
