Saturated hydrocarbons are a class of organic compounds made up entirely of carbon-carbon single bonds and carbon-hydrogen single bonds, and they are referred to as alkanes. They are also known as paraffins, which means “little affinity” in Latin, indicating their lack of reactivity toward other chemical compounds. In this class of hydrocarbons, the carbon atoms are linked together by single covalent bonds, resulting in a long, straight or branched chain structure for each hydrocarbon molecule. These hydrocarbons are called “saturated” because they are fully saturated with hydrogen atoms, meaning that each carbon atom has a complete complement of four chemical bonds.

Saturated hydrocarbons typically have relatively low boiling points and are generally less dense than liquid water. They are generally chemically inactive and less reactive than unsaturated hydrocarbons like alkenes or alkynes. They are mostly found in nature as components of natural gas, petroleum, and some types of coal. Because of their low reactivity and stability, saturated hydrocarbons are commonly used as fuels, solvents, and lubricants in a wide range of industrial applications. They are also used in the production of plastics, such as polyethylene and polypropylene, as well as other materials, including waxes, oils, and fats.
