Aliphatic hydrocarbon is a type of hydrocarbon that contains carbon atoms arranged in an open chain or branched structure. These hydrocarbons differ from aromatic hydrocarbons in that they lack a cyclic structure. Aliphatic hydrocarbons can be saturated or unsaturated. Saturated aliphatic hydrocarbons have all single bonds between carbon atoms and are known as alkanes. Examples of saturated aliphatic hydrocarbons include methane, ethane, propane, and butane. Unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbons have one or more double or triple bonds between carbon atoms and are known as alkenes or alkynes. Examples of unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbons include ethylene, propylene, and acetylene. Aliphatic hydrocarbons have various industrial and commercial applications, including as fuels, solvents, and raw materials for the production of chemicals and plastics.
