How to Name Cyclic Aldehydes: A Step-by-Step Guide

Naming cyclic Aldehydes

Acetaldehyde

Cyclic aldehydes are those organic compounds that contain both a cyclic structure and an aldehyde functional group (-CHO) attached to one of the carbon atoms in the ring.

The naming of cyclic aldehydes follows the same rules as normal aldehydes, but with the additional consideration of the cycloalkane ring.

The steps for naming cyclic aldehydes are:

1. Find the longest carbon chain within the ring, and number the carbons of the ring starting at the aldehyde group. The aldehyde group always gets the number 1.

2. Identify the aldehyde functional group (-CHO) by adding the suffix “-al” to the end of the root name of the parent cycloalkane.

3. If there are any substituents on the cycloalkane ring, name them using the appropriate prefixes and position numbers.

4. Combine the name of the parent cycloalkane with the name of the aldehyde functional group, using the appropriate position numbers and hyphens to separate the words.

For example, the cyclic aldehyde shown below contains a cyclopentane ring with an aldehyde group attached to the second carbon atom.

The systematic name for this compound is 2-pentanal or cyclopentanecarboxaldehyde.

Note that the suffix “-al” is added to the end of the parent cycloalkane name “pentane”, and the additional prefix “cyclo-” is added to indicate the cyclic nature of the compound. The position of the aldehyde group is indicated by the number 2.
