The general formula for alkanes is CnH2n+2, where n is the number of carbon atoms in the molecule. For example, methane (CH4) has one carbon atom, so its formula is C1H4. Ethane (C2H6) has two carbon atoms, so its formula is C2H6.

The physical properties of alkanes depend on their molecular size and shape. As the number of carbon atoms in an alkane molecule increases, its boiling point and melting point also increase. This is because larger molecules have stronger intermolecular forces of attraction than smaller molecules. Alkanes are generally nonpolar and do not dissolve well in water, but they are good solvents for other nonpolar substances.

Alkanes undergo a variety of chemical reactions, including combustion, halogenation, and cracking. Combustion of alkanes produces carbon dioxide, water, and heat. Halogenation involves substitution of a hydrogen atom in an alkane with a halogen atom (e.g. chlorine or bromine). Cracking involves breaking large alkane molecules into smaller molecules (e.g. alkenes) by heating them in the presence of a catalyst.

Overall, alkanes are important hydrocarbons that are used in a variety of industrial processes and chemical reactions.
