Amniotic Fluid: Characteristics, Volumes and Importance for Fetal Development during Pregnancy

What is an expected characteristic of amniotic fluid?

pale, straw color with small white particles

Amniotic fluid is the clear, slightly yellowish liquid that surrounds and protects the fetus during pregnancy. An expected characteristic of amniotic fluid is that it should be clear and free of any odor or foul smell. The normal volume of amniotic fluid increases as gestation progresses, from around 30ml at 10 weeks of gestation to around 800-1000 ml at term (37-42 weeks of gestation), and then starts decreasing as the baby swallows it and excretes it as urine. The amniotic fluid also serves to cushion the developing fetus, maintain a constant temperature, and allow for fetal movement. Any abnormalities in the color, smell, or volume of amniotic fluid should be reported to the healthcare provider immediately, as they may indicate a potential health problem.
