What is the difference between DNA and RNA?

DNA is double stranded and RNA is single stranded. DNA is deoxyribose and RNA is ribose. DNA stays in the nucleus and RNA leaves the nucleus to make protein.

DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) and RNA (ribonucleic acid) are the two main types of nucleic acids that play a crucial role in the transmission of genetic information in living organisms.

The primary differences between DNA and RNA are as follows:

1. Structure: DNA has a double helix structure consisting of two long chains made up of nucleotide subunits. Each nucleotide in DNA contains a deoxyribose sugar, a phosphate group and one of four nitrogenous bases: adenine (A), guanine (G), cytosine (C) and thymine (T). On the other hand, RNA is generally single-stranded and contains ribose sugar instead of deoxyribose and uracil (U) instead of thymine.

2. Function: DNA stores and transmits genetic information, whereas RNA plays a key role in protein synthesis. DNA acts as a blueprint for the production of all the proteins an organism needs by providing the instructions for building the RNA molecules that carry these instructions to the ribosomes.

3. Stability: DNA is generally more stable than RNA due to the presence of one less oxygen atom in each of its nucleotides. The presence of the 2’-hydroxyl group in RNA makes it more susceptible to chemical degradation.

4. Location: DNA is typically found in the cell nucleus, while RNA can be found both in the nucleus and in the cytoplasm.

In summary, while DNA provides the blueprint for life, RNA is responsible for carrying out the instructions to build proteins that make life possible.
