The body’s primary response to being invaded is through the immune system, which is designed to protect the body against diseases and illnesses. One of the first lines of defense against invaders is the skin, which acts as a physical barrier to prevent invasion into the body. Mucous membranes, such as those in the respiratory and digestive tracts, also help to trap potential invaders and prevent them from entering the body.

If an invader does manage to breach these barriers, specialized immune cells called white blood cells are activated to identify and destroy the invader. This response is triggered by the detection of specific substances on the surface of the invader called antigens. White blood cells produce antibodies which recognize antigens and neutralize them, stopping the attack and preventing further harm.

In addition to these mechanisms, the immune system can also activate other responses such as fever, inflammation, and the release of chemical signals that attract other immune cells to the site of an infection. These responses work together to help the body fight off invasions and restore health.
