The Earth’s atmosphere is primarily heated through solar radiation. The Sun emits energy in the form of electromagnetic waves, including visible light and ultraviolet (UV) radiation. When these waves reach the Earth’s atmosphere, they are absorbed or scattered by gases such as water vapor, carbon dioxide, and ozone. This absorption warms up the atmosphere.

Another way the atmosphere is heated is through the Earth’s surface. The land and oceans absorb some of the solar radiation that reaches the Earth and re-radiate the energy as infrared radiation. Some of this infrared radiation is absorbed by greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, which then warms up and radiates some of the heat back to the Earth. This process is called the greenhouse effect.

Convection is also a key way for heat to be transported in the atmosphere. As the Earth’s surface is heated, warm air rises and cooler air sinks, creating convection currents that transfer heat throughout the atmosphere.

Finally, some heat in the atmosphere comes from sources other than the Sun, such as volcanic eruptions or human activities like burning fossil fuels. These events release heat-trapping gases that warm the atmosphere.
