In the natural environment, phosphate can exist in different forms, such as orthophosphate, pyrophosphate, and polyphosphate, which vary in terms of their chemical structure and reactivity. Orthophosphate is the most common and biologically available form of phosphate that is readily absorbed by living organisms.

However, excessive amounts of phosphate can cause environmental problems such as eutrophication, which is the process where excessive nutrients in water bodies lead to the growth of algae and other aquatic plants, depleting the oxygen levels and causing harm to aquatic life. Therefore, managing phosphate levels is important for maintaining the health of ecosystems and the sustainability of agriculture and other industries that rely on phosphorus resources.
