Ammonium is a positively charged ion comprised of one nitrogen atom and four hydrogen atoms (NH4+) that is typically formed when ammonia (NH3) reacts with a proton (H+). This reaction occurs frequently in biology and chemistry, and ammonium ions can be found in various biological and environmental systems.

In acidic environments, ammonia is more likely to exist as ammonium as the H+ ions present in the acidic solution react with the NH3 to form NH4+.

One important biological utilization of ammonium is in nitrogen fixation. This is the process by which specialized bacteria and archaea transform nitrogen gas (N2) from the atmosphere into ammonium that can be utilized by various organisms. These organisms take in the ammonium and use it to synthesize amino acids, nucleotides, and other essential molecules.

Ammonium is also found in fertilizers as a source of nitrogen for plants, and can be toxic in high concentrations. Industrial wastewater and animal waste management are important areas for consideration of ammonium levels, as high concentrations can cause eutrophication in waterways and impact aquatic life.
