An element is a substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means. It is a pure substance that is composed of a single type of atom. Elements are the building blocks of all matter and are listed on the periodic table in order of increasing atomic number. Each element has a unique set of physical and chemical properties that influence its behavior in nature. There are currently 118 known elements, with 92 of them occurring naturally and the rest being synthetic, with atomic numbers ranging from 1 (hydrogen) to 118 (oganesson). Elements are used in a wide range of applications like medicine, technology, agriculture, and industry.
