Sensory neurons, also known as afferent neurons, are specialized neurons that transmit sensory information from various receptor cells or sensory organs to the central nervous system (CNS). These neurons help the body to detect and respond to changes in its internal and external environment.

Sensory neurons have a unique structure that enables them to transmit electrical impulses. They are elongated cells that consist of a cell body, dendrites, and an axon. The dendrites are specialized extensions that receive signals from the sensory receptors. These signals are then passed to the cell body, which in turn sends the electrical impulse along the axon towards the CNS.

There are several different types of sensory neurons that are responsible for detecting different types of stimuli. Some of the most common sensory neurons include photoreceptors (found in the eyes and responsible for detecting light), mechanoreceptors (found in the skin, muscles, and joints and responsible for detecting touch and pressure), and chemoreceptors (found in the nose and mouth and responsible for detecting taste and smell).

Sensory neurons play a crucial role in allowing the body to perceive its surroundings and respond accordingly. Without these neurons, we would not be able to sense our environment and respond to potentially harmful stimuli.
