Oxygen is a chemical element with the symbol ‘O’ and atomic number 8. It is a member of the chalcogen group on the periodic table, a highly reactive nonmetallic element that readily forms compounds (especially oxides) with most elements as well as with other compounds.

Oxygen is the third-most abundant chemical element by mass in the universe, after hydrogen and helium. At standard temperature and pressure, two atoms of the element bind to form dioxygen, a colorless and odorless diatomic gas with the formula O2. Dioxygen is used in cellular respiration and many major classes of organic molecules in living organisms contain oxygen.

Oxygen also has many industrial and commercial uses, such as in welding and cutting metals, in the production of chemicals, and in medical oxygen tanks for patients with respiratory disorders.

In our atmosphere, oxygen is present at a concentration of approximately 21% by volume, making it the third-most abundant component of air. It is essential for the survival of most living organisms on Earth, enabling cellular respiration which is the process of converting food into usable energy.
