Charles Darwin (1809-1882) was an English naturalist who is best known for his theory of evolution through natural selection. However, during this time, he became more interested in natural history and embarked on a five-year voyage on the HMS Beagle.
During his voyage, Darwin collected numerous specimens and observed the natural world around him. He noticed that species varied from one place to another, and that some species were better adapted to their environments than others. He also noticed that there were similarities between different species, indicating that they had a common ancestor. This led him to develop the theory of evolution by natural selection.
Darwin’s theory states that individuals within a species vary in their traits, and those individuals that are better adapted to their environment are more likely to survive and reproduce. Over time, these advantageous traits become more common in the population, and the species evolves.
Darwin’s theory of evolution was revolutionary and controversial at the time, as it contradicted the prevailing beliefs of the day. However, his discoveries and observations were eventually accepted and his work has had a lasting impact on our understanding of the natural world.
