A monomer is a small molecule that can bind with other similar molecules to form a polymer. Monomers are the building blocks of polymers. Similarly, in the case of carbohydrates, simple sugars like glucose act as monomers that join together through glycosidic bonds to form polysaccharides like starch or cellulose. Monomers can also exist as individual units, like in the case of the monomer used to make polyethylene plastic, which is ethylene. Various types of monomers are used to create different types of polymers with varying properties.
