Effects of Distilled, Deionized, and Demineralized Water on Dental Health

Can distilled / deionized / demineralized water “attack” teeth?

Distilled, deionized, or demineralized water does not directly “attack” teeth. In fact, these types of water do not contain any minerals or dissolved substances, hence are considered pure or extremely low in mineral content. They do not have the typical properties of tap water, such as fluoride, calcium, or other ions which can contribute to tooth decay or dental erosion.

Tooth decay or erosion usually occurs due to the presence of certain acids in the mouth that can dissolve the tooth enamel over time. These acids can be produced by bacteria in dental plaque or from the consumption of acidic food and drinks. The pH level of a substance determines whether it is acidic, alkaline, or neutral. Distilled, deionized, or demineralized water usually has a neutral pH of 7, which means it is neither acidic nor alkaline

That being said, drinking only distilled, deionized, or demineralized water for an extended period without any other sources of minerals might not be ideal for dental health. Teeth require some minerals, such as fluoride, calcium, and phosphate, for remineralization and maintaining their strength. Tap water, which often contains fluoride, can help strengthen teeth and protect against cavities
