Adrenal glands are two small, triangular-shaped glands located on top of each kidney. The outer layer of the adrenal gland, called the adrenal cortex, produces steroid hormones, including cortisol and aldosterone, that help regulate metabolism and blood pressure. The inner layer of the adrenal gland, called the adrenal medulla, produces catecholamines, including adrenaline and noradrenaline, that are involved in the body’s “fight or flight” response to stress. Disorders of the adrenal gland, such as Addison’s disease and Cushing’s syndrome, can cause a variety of symptoms and may require medical intervention.
