4. Mitral Valve: The mitral valve, also known as the bicuspid valve, is situated between the left atrium and the left ventricle. It consists of two leaflets and ensures blood flows from the left atrium to the left ventricle while preventing regurgitation.

The opening and closing of these valves are controlled by pressure changes in the heart chambers and by the contraction and relaxation of the heart muscles. The valves open when the pressure on one side is higher than the other, and close when the pressure on the opposite side becomes higher. This rhythmic opening and closing of valves is what creates the characteristic thumping sound of a heartbeat when listened to with a stethoscope.
