CThe ampulla, or distal third, of the fallopian tube is the usual site of fertilization (seeFigure 23-7).

The usual site of fertilization of an ovum is in the ampulla of the fallopian tubes. The ampulla is the wider part of the fallopian tubes where the fertilization usually occurs because the movement of the cilia and muscular contractions of the tubes help move the sperm and egg towards each other. The fimbriae at the end of the tubes near the ovary help to draw the ovum out from the ovary and into the tube. The os of the fallopian tubes is the opening of the tube into the uterus. Once fertilization occurs, the zygote travels down the fallopian tube, undergoes cell division and then implants itself into the uterine wall.
