The throat is often referred to as the pharynx, which is a muscular tube that connects the nasal cavity and mouth to the esophagus and larynx. The pharynx has three main parts:

2. Oropharynx – This is the middle part of the pharynx and is located behind the mouth. It serves as a common pathway for both the respiratory and digestive systems. The oropharynx houses the tonsils and is responsible for initiating the swallowing reflex.
3. Laryngopharynx – This is the lowest part of the pharynx and extends from the epiglottis to the esophagus. It serves as a pathway for food and water to pass through to the esophagus and into the stomach. Additionally, it contains the vocal cords, which are responsible for producing sound when air passes through them during speech or singing.
