White blood cells (WBCs) are an important component of our immune system and are responsible for defending the body against infections and diseases. They are also known as leukocytes and are produced in the bone marrow.

There are five different types of WBCs: neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, and basophils. Each type of WBC has a specific function in defending the body against a different type of infection.

Neutrophils are the most abundant type of WBCs and are responsible for fighting bacterial infections. They engulf and destroy bacteria in the body.

Lymphocytes are responsible for fighting off viral infections and also play a role in destroying cancer cells. There are two types of lymphocytes: B-cells and T-cells.

Monocytes are responsible for phagocytosis of pathogens, and also have an important role in presenting antigens to other cells of the immune system.

Eosinophils are involved in fighting parasitic infections and are also involved in allergic responses.

Basophils release histamine and other inflammatory mediators in response to allergens or other pathogens.

The number of WBCs in the blood can vary depending on various factors such as age, gender, and environmental factors. An abnormal WBC count can indicate an infection, disease, or other health problems, and a healthcare provider may order a blood test to determine the WBC count and diagnose the underlying condition.
