Pharynx
Tube that connects the mouth to the larynx and esophagus.
The pharynx is a part of the digestive and respiratory system located behind the nasal and oral cavities and above the larynx. It is a muscular tube that connects the nasal and oral cavities to the esophagus and the trachea. The pharynx functions in both digestion and respiration, as it serves as a passageway for food, fluids, and air. It is divided into three parts: the nasopharynx, oropharynx, and laryngopharynx. The nasopharynx is located behind the nasal cavity and is lined with ciliated epithelium that helps to trap and remove dust, particles, and pathogens. The oropharynx is located behind the oral cavity and is responsible for swallowing and speech. The laryngopharynx is located behind the larynx and contains the entrance of the esophagus and the trachea.
