Everything You Need to Know About Basal Cell Carcinoma: Causes, Symptoms, Treatments and Prevention

Basal Cell Carcinoma

Most common and least severe type of skin cancer; often characterized by light or pearly nodules.

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common type of skin cancer and it arises from the basal cells in the bottom layer of the skin. It usually appears as a small, shiny, raised bump on the skin, which may have a crusty or scaly appearance, that is slow-growing and rarely spreads to other parts of the body. It typically occurs on areas of the skin exposed to the sun, such as the face, neck, and ears, although it can develop on any part of the body. The exact cause of basal cell carcinoma is unknown, but it’s linked to long-term exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation.

The treatment for basal cell carcinoma usually involves removing the cancerous growth through surgical excision, which involves removing the cancerous tissue and a small margin of normal skin around it. Other treatment options include Mohs micrographic surgery, radiation therapy, cryosurgery, photodynamic therapy, and topical medications, depending on the size, location, and severity of the cancer. Early diagnosis and treatment are important, as basal cell carcinoma can grow and invade deeper layers of the skin and surrounding tissues, leading to morbidity and disfigurement. It’s important for individuals to practice good sun protection habits, such as wearing protective clothing, hats, and sunglasses, using sunscreen with a high sun protection factor (SPF), and avoiding the sun during peak hours.
