The dorsalis pedis artery is a major blood vessel that runs across the top of the foot. It is a continuation of the anterior tibial artery and is responsible for supplying blood to the dorsum (top) of the foot and toes.
The dorsalis pedis artery can be palpated on the top of the foot, just lateral to the tendon of the extensor hallucis longus muscle. It is a common site for measuring a person’s pulse.
This artery can become occluded or narrowed, leading to reduced blood flow to the foot. This may cause symptoms such as pain or numbness in the foot, especially during exercise or walking. In severe cases, it may lead to foot ulcers or gangrene, requiring medical intervention such as angioplasty or bypass surgery.
