The dermis is the second layer of skin beneath the top layer (epidermis). It is the thickest layer of skin and is primarily composed of connective tissue which gives it strength, elasticity and resilience. The dermis contains hair follicles, sweat glands, sebaceous glands, nerve endings, blood vessels (arteries and veins), and lymphatic vessels. The dermis plays an important role in regulating body temperature and in protecting the body against external damage.

There are two layers within the dermis: the papillary layer and the reticular layer. The papillary layer is the thin and superficial layer of the dermis and contains small projections called dermal papillae. The reticular layer, on the other hand, is deeper and thicker, and contains thicker bundles of collagen and elastin fibers that support the skin’s structure.

The dermis is responsible for the sensation of touch, pressure, pain, and temperature. It also provides nutrients and oxygen to the epidermis and supports hair follicles and sweat glands. The dermis also plays a role in wound healing, creating scar tissue to repair damaged skin. Overall, the dermis is an important part of the integumentary system that provides structure and protection to the body.
