Blood is a specialized fluid substance that circulates throughout the body, carrying oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and waste products. It’s composed of different components, including red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and plasma.

Red blood cells, also known as erythrocytes, contain a protein called hemoglobin that binds oxygen and transports it from the lungs to the body’s tissues. White blood cells, or leukocytes, are essential components of the immune system, helping to protect the body from infections, viruses, and other harmful substances. Platelets, or thrombocytes, play a crucial role in clotting and bleeding control.

Plasma is the liquid portion of blood, which makes up about 55% of the blood volume. It’s composed of water, electrolytes, hormones, proteins, and other substances that help to transport nutrients, hormones, and waste products throughout the body.

Blood is primarily produced in the bone marrow, which is the spongy tissue found inside most of our bones. The production of blood cells is regulated by various hormones and growth factors.

Disorders of the blood can range from anemia, which is a deficiency in red blood cell production, to leukemia, which is a type of cancer that can affect the white blood cells. Other blood disorders include clotting disorders, such as hemophilia, and autoimmune disorders, such as lupus.
