Mastering Math: Simplifying and Factoring Algebraic Expressions

Factoring classics:ab+ac=?a2+2ab+b2=?a2+b2=?

a(b+c)(a+b)2(a+b)(a-b)

1. ab + ac
We can take out the common factor of a to get:
ab + ac = a(b + c)

2. a2 + 2ab + b2
This expression represents the square of the binomial (a + b) so we can write it as:
a2 + 2ab + b2 = (a + b)2

3. a2 + b2
This expression cannot be factored any further using just real numbers. It is, however, the sum of two perfect squares and can be written as:
a2 + b2 = (a + b)(a – b)
