Understanding Transversals | Exploring Angles and Parallel Lines in Geometry

transversal

In geometry, a transversal is a line that intersects two or more other lines at distinct points

In geometry, a transversal is a line that intersects two or more other lines at distinct points. The lines that are intersected by the transversal are called the consecutive interior angles.

There are four main types of angles formed by a transversal:

1. Corresponding angles: These are pairs of angles that are in the same relative position at each intersection point. Corresponding angles are located on the same side of the transversal and are either both interior or both exterior angles. They are congruent when the intersected lines are parallel.

2. Alternate interior angles: These are pairs of angles that are on opposite sides of the transversal, and on the interior of the two intersected lines. They are congruent when the intersected lines are parallel.

3. Alternate exterior angles: These are pairs of angles that are on opposite sides of the transversal, and on the exterior of the two intersected lines. They are congruent when the intersected lines are parallel.

4. Interior angles on the same side of the transversal: These are pairs of angles that are on the same side of the transversal, and on the interior of the two intersected lines. The sum of these angles is always equal to 180 degrees.

Transversals are often used in geometry to study the properties of parallel lines, find unknown angles, or prove geometric theorems.
