Proportional Relationships: Examples And Equations

Proportional relationship

When two ratios are equal to each other. It is an equation that states that two ratios are equal.

A proportional relationship is a type of relationship between two variables where they have a constant ratio. This means that when one variable increases or decreases, the other variable changes in direct proportion to it.

For example, let’s say a shop sells apples for $2 each. The cost of buying apples is directly proportional to the number of apples purchased. If you buy one apple, it will cost you $2. If you buy two apples, it will cost you $4. If you buy three apples, it will cost you $6. As you can see, the cost of buying apples increases proportionally with the number of apples purchased.

Another example of a proportional relationship is the relationship between time and distance traveled at a constant speed. If you travel at a constant speed of 60 mph, then the distance you travel is directly proportional to the amount of time you spend traveling. For instance, if you travel for 1 hour, you will cover a distance of 60 miles. If you travel for 2 hours, you will cover a distance of 120 miles. This relationship will hold as long as you maintain the same speed.

In general, if two variables are proportional to each other, if we plot them on a graph, we will get a straight line that passes through the origin (0, 0). The equation of the line will be y = kx, where k is the proportionality constant.
