Master The Math Of Trapezoids: Formulas For Area, Height And Perimeter

Trapezoid

A quadrilateral with one set of parallel sides

A trapezoid is a two-dimensional shapes that has four sides or edges, with at least one pair of parallel opposite sides. It is also known as a trapezium in some countries. Since there are parallel sides, trapezoids have two bases – a shorter base, and a longer base, which are usually shown as a, and b respectively.

The height (h) of a trapezoid is the perpendicular distance between the two bases, and can be found by drawing a line from one base to the other, perpendicular to both.

The area of a trapezoid can be found using the formula A = 0.5 × (a + b) × h, where A is the area of the trapezoid.

The perimeter of a trapezoid can be found by adding the lengths of all four sides (a, b, c and d), where c and d are the two non-parallel sides.

Trapezoids are commonly found in everyday objects such as table tops, roofing designs and as shapes in geometry problems.
