In mathematics, discontinuity refers to a point or a value where a function fails to be continuous. A function is said to be continuous if there are no sudden jumps, holes, or breaks in its graph.

There are three types of discontinuities:
1. Removable Discontinuity: This occurs when there is a hole or a single point missing in the graph of the function. It means that the function might be undefined at that particular point, but it can still be made continuous by assigning a value to it. This type of discontinuity can be “removed” by plugging the hole or defining the function at that specific point.

2. Jump Discontinuity: This happens when there is a sudden and finite jump or gap in the graph of the function. There are two distinct values on either side of the discontinuity, and they do not approach each other. Jump discontinuities are often found in step functions or piecewise-defined functions.

3. Essential Discontinuity: This type of discontinuity occurs when the function has a vertical asymptote or the value of the function approaches infinity or negative infinity. At these points, the function has no limit, and the graph exhibits an unbounded behavior.

It’s important to note that not all discontinuities are considered problematic. Discontinuities can provide us with useful information about the behavior of a function and help in analyzing its properties. Moreover, continuity is a significant concept in calculus, as it allows us to apply various principles and theorems related to differentiation and integration.
