Baron Friedrich Wilhelm August Heinrich Ferdinand von Steuben (1730-1794) was a Prussian military officer who is best known for his instrumental role in the American Revolutionary War. Von Steuben served as an inspector general and major general in the Continental Army and is largely credited with helping to transform the ragtag army into a more organized and disciplined fighting force.
Von Steuben was recruited by Benjamin Franklin and arrived in America in 1777, where he immediately began working with General George Washington to improve the training and organization of the Continental Army. He wrote and implemented the first set of drill and training manuals used by the army, which emphasized discipline, cleanliness, and organization.
Through his efforts, von Steuben helped to instill a sense of pride and professionalism in the Continental Army, which had been lacking before his arrival. He also played an important role in the critical battle of Valley Forge, which was a turning point in the war.
After the war, von Steuben settled in New York and was granted American citizenship. He remained active in military affairs and continued to offer his expertise to the new American government until his death in 1794.
