However, Arnold’s patriotism to the American cause began to wane in 1779, following a series of setbacks in his military career, including accusations of misconduct and a dispute with his superiors over a promotion. Arnold became disgruntled and began to have secret correspondence with British officials, seeking to betray the American side.

In 1780, Arnold was given command of West Point, a strategic fortification on the Hudson River. He engaged in negotiations with the British to hand over the fort in exchange for a large sum of money and a high-ranking position in the British army. However, the plot was uncovered, and Arnold fled to the British side.

Arnold’s betrayal was a major blow to the American cause, and he became reviled as a traitor by his former comrades. Today, his name is synonymous with treachery and betrayal.
