Rameses I
“The beginner of the great hypostyle hall at karnak and thefounder of the 19th dynasty.”
Rameses I was the pharaoh of Egypt who ruled from 1292 to 1290 BC, during the nineteenth dynasty of ancient Egypt. He was the founder of this dynasty and the father of Seti I who later succeeded him as pharaoh. Rameses I was born in the city of Avaris and grew up in the eastern Nile Delta region of Egypt. He came to power after the death of his predecessor, Horemheb, who had no natural heirs.
As the first king of the nineteenth dynasty, Rameses I sought to establish his royal authority over Egypt’s territories, particularly in the northeast regions of the Nile Delta. During his short time on the throne, Rameses I initiated a building program in Karnak temple, near Thebes, where he added several new structures, including a small chapel and a statue of himself.
Rameses I’s reign was brief, and he died after just two years on the throne. Upon his death, his son, Seti I, succeeded him as pharaoh. Rameses I’s legacy was mainly that he was the founding father of the nineteenth dynasty and the establishment of a new dynasty ensured the stability and continuity of Egypt’s governance.
