These shells are arranged in increasing energy levels, starting from the innermost shell closest to the nucleus. The first shell can hold a maximum of 2 electrons, the second shell 8 electrons, and so on.

The arrangement of electrons in the electron shells is responsible for the chemical properties of an atom. The outermost shell, called the valence shell, is particularly important. Atoms strive to have a full valence shell, typically by gaining, losing, or sharing electrons with other atoms to achieve stability. This process forms chemical bonds and enables the formation of molecules and compounds.

The atomic number of an atom is determined by the number of protons in its nucleus, while the atomic mass is the total mass of an atom, which is the sum of protons and neutrons. The mass of an electron is much smaller in comparison and is often neglected for atomic mass calculations.

Atoms combine in various ways to form molecules and compounds, which are the basis of all substances. Understanding the properties and behavior of atoms is essential in scientific fields such as chemistry, physics, and materials science, as it provides a foundation for understanding the nature of matter and the interactions between different substances.
